The team-play evolution of 25. Same card rankings, more strategy, more craic.
Overview
Forty-Five builds on the rules of Twenty-Five (25).
It uses the same card rankings, the same trick-play rules, and the same 5-card hands
โ but it's played over more hands to a target of 45 points, and is most commonly
played with teams/partnerships.
If you already know how to play 25, you already know 90% of 45.

8 players: 2 teams of 4 (alternating seats) or 4 teams of 2
Deal 5 cards to each player (3 then 2, or 2 then 3).
Turn up a trump card โ the suit of the turned card is trumps.
The deal passes to the left after each hand.
Card Rankings
Identical to 25. See the 25 Playing Guide for the full breakdown.
QUICK REMINDER
TRUMP: 5 > J > (Joker) > Aโฅ > A(trump) > K > Q
then numbers: "highest in red, lowest in black"
NON-TRUMP: K > Q > J then numbers
Red: highโlow (10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2)
Black: A then lowโhigh (2,3,4,5โฆ10) โฅ Aโฅ = ALWAYS trump |
โฆ Aโฆ = lowest diamond
Robbing the Trump
Same rules as 25:
Holder of the Ace of trumps may rob the turned-up trump card before playing.
Dealer may rob if they turned up an Ace.
Must be done before playing your first card.
Playing a Hand
Same rules as 25:
Player to the dealer's left leads the first trick.
Must follow suit or play a trump (you can always choose to trump even if you could follow suit).
Top trumps (5, J, Joker if used, Aโฅ) can renege โ cannot be forced out unless a higher trump is led.
Highest trump played wins; if no trumps, highest card of the led suit wins.
Winner of each trick leads the next.
Scoring
Event
Points
Each trick won
5 points
Win all 5 tricks in a hand
Jink โ see below
Team members' tricks are combined โ if you win 2 tricks and your partner wins 1, your team scores 15.
Each hand is worth a maximum of 25 points (5 tricks ร 5 points).
First team to 45 points wins the game.
Jink (Winning All 5 Tricks)
If one team wins all 5 tricks in a single hand, this is called a "jink". Common house rules:
Standard: Score the normal 25 points for winning all tricks.
Bonus variant: Score 30 points for a jink (25 + 5 bonus).
Instant win variant: A jink wins the game immediately, regardless of score.
โ ๏ธ House rules vary significantly โ agree on jink rules before playing.
Game Flow
Round 1: Deal โ Rob โ Play 5 tricks โ Score
Round 2: Deal โ Rob โ Play 5 tricks โ Score
Round 3: โฆcontinueโฆ
โ First team to 45 points WINS
Unlike 25, the game does not stop mid-hand โ finish the hand and then check scores.
If two teams reach 45+ in the same hand, the team that won their deciding trick first (earliest in the hand) wins.
Team Strategy
Communication
You cannot tell your partner what cards you hold.
You cannot signal or give hints about your hand.
Strategy must be based on observation โ watch what your partner plays and react.
Key Team Tactics
โ๏ธ Lead Strong
If you have top trumps, lead them to draw out opponents' trumps. Your partner benefits from a cleared trump landscape.
๐ค Support Your Partner
If your partner leads a strong non-trump suit, play low to let them win โ don't compete with your own partner!
๐ฏ Sacrifice Wisely
Sometimes it's worth "throwing away" a trick to set up your partner for a later one.
๐งฎ Count Tricks
Only 5 tricks per hand. If your team has 3, play conservatively. Need all remaining? Play aggressively.
๐ Watch the Score
If your team is on 40, you only need one trick. Play for guaranteed tricks rather than sweeping.
๐ก๏ธ Defend Against Jinks
If opponents have won 3 or 4 tricks, fight hard to prevent all 5 (especially if jink rules give a bonus).

Description
Strict 45 (No Overshoot)
Must reach exactly 45. Overshoot resets to the last multiple of 5 below 45 (e.g., 40).
45 with Stakes
Each game played for a small stake. Jink may earn a double stake.
Free-for-All 45
Played individually rather than in teams. First to 45 wins.
